My Thoughts on Growing a Tech Startup In Toronto vs. Silicon Valley

I’m going to go on record and say that Toronto is the best city in the world to start and grow and global enterprise. It’s a truly global city - diverse in experience and perspectives. The startup community is vibrant and the energy is powerful.

I don’t think we would have been able to do what we’ve been able to do in any other city. We’ve grown our team from 10 to 70 fueled by a growing client roster. Like Toronto, our team is diverse in experience and perspectives with a vibrant and powerful energy.

We’ve recently been invited to join the C100’s 48 hours in Valley December Cohort. C100 is a non-profit, member-driven organization built by successful Canadian investors, entrepreneurs, and executives living in Silicon Valley that offers Canadian founders access to the venture capital, mentorship and knowledge necessary for growth at a global scale.

Why Do Canadian Startups Need Silicon Valley?

This begs the question - why do Canadian startups need that valley connection? Here are a couple thoughts:

We can benefit from the ecosystem that SF has created. With programs like C100 we gain access to an invaluable network committed to sharing their knowledge and influence to help us grow.

We can learn from others, regardless of geography. Some of the brightest and most successful entrepreneurs in the valley are Canadian. Connecting with and learning from their experience is hugely helpful.

We need to show them the quality of company that’s being built in Canada and Toronto. There are many reasons why investors look north of the border for innovation. The more success stories we can share, the more interest we’ll get. The more interest we get, the more companies will grow.

So with that - we’re heading to SF on Dec 7 and 8th to participate in 48 hours in the valley. Will report back on what we learned.
